In today's IT environment it is important for IT professionals to demonstrate that their knowledge and skills are current. CompTIA's new renewal policy is a way to assist those candidates who would like to take advantage of it.
CompTIA's certification renewal policy includes a Continuing Education Program component that gives eligible certification holders a range of ways to keep their CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Storage+, CompTIA Security+, CASP and Mobility+ certifications current without necessarily having to take a new exam.
Effective January 1, 2011, all new CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) and Mobility+ certifications will be valid for three years from the date the candidate is certified. The certification must be renewed within three years in order for the individual to remain certified.
These certifications can be maintained by passing the most current CompTIA exam prior to the three-year expiration date or enrolling in CompTIA's Continuing Education (CE) Program. This initiative allows participants to keep skills and certifications current through a variety of activities that show an understanding of relevant industry knowledge.
Individuals certified in CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+ on or before Dec. 31, 2010, are considered certified for life. However, these certified professionals can enroll in the CE program to demonstrate to employers that their knowledge is current and relevant.
Individuals who enroll in the CE program earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Qualifying Courses (Hyperlink to PDF with the list) that count toward maintaining their certifications.
|Certification||CEUs required for renewal|
|CompTIA A+||20 CEUs|
|CompTIA Network+||30 CEUs|
|CompTIA Security+||50 CEUs|
|CompTIA Mobility+||30 CEUs|
|CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP)||75 CEUs|
Some higher-level CompTIA certifications will automatically renew lower-level certifications (shown in their respective order, highest-level to lowest-level, below.) CompTIA Mobility+ and CompTIA Cloud+ do not automatically renew other certifications.
Candidates certified in CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+ on or before December 31, 2010 are considered "certified for life" and are not required to renew their certifications. Candidates do have the option of enrolling in the Continuing Education Program to earn a "ce" designation which demonstrates to employers their knowledge is current and relevant. Candidates will have until December 31, 2012 to enroll in the program. After that date candidates would have to recertify to acquire the "ce" designation.
Effective January 1, 2011, all new CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Storage+, CompTIA Security+ and CASP certifications will be valid for three years from the date the candidate is certified. These certifications will be denoted with a "ce" designation which means they will expire three years from the date certified. If the certification is not renewed within the three years candidates will be no longer be certified and must retake the exam to reactivate their certification.
