As the city's demand for well-trained computer networking, programming  and hardware specialists swells, schools like NetCom are rising to the occasion. The Long Island City based NetCom limits class size to eight students to enable teachers to spend time with each student. NetCom also helps students obtain internships at companies like Lucent, AT&T, IBM and Philip Morris which can lead to full-time employment.

"We're also certified as a Sylvan Prometric Testing Center, so people can take their tests right here," says Russell Sarder, president of NetCom's education  division. NetCom is also one of the few New York area computer training schools to teach intensive Linux courses. While the Linux operation system still claims just 20% and 30% of networks, this figure will grow as more companies realize its benefits, says Sarder.

NetCom also offers an Internet Professional course, designed by IBM webmaster Adam Chnge, that includes Web design and management; an A+ course, which teaches computer hardware technology; and MOUS (Microsoft Office Users Specialist) which provides in depth training in popular office word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
